This question is the philosophical anchor of HAND. It frames neighboring as a moral, civic, and economic practice — not charity, not gig work, not transactional labor.

HAND exists to restore the dignity of interdependence by creating hyperlocal systems where people can ask for help, offer help, and circulate value within their own community. The philosophy blends the ethic of Jesus' teaching with the everyday practicality of Mr. Rogers: neighbors caring for neighbors, across borders, across differences, across circumstances.

How it works

A small, well-defined task: a ride, a yard, an errand, a translation, an hour of help.

A neighbor responds

Someone close by — not an anonymous worker — sees the post and reaches out.

Agree on terms

Pay full price, pay reduced, trade favors, or use Hand Credits. Both parties choose.

The task is completed in a way that respects both helper and requester.

Hand Credits

When money doesn't tell the whole story.

Hand Credits are an optional way for neighbors to balance a fair price with what's actually possible — through future help, errands, rides, childcare, tutoring, yard work, meal prep, or anything both parties agree holds value.

Every exchange is participant-chosen. The platform never pushes you toward monetization, never auctions your time to the lowest bidder, and never takes a cut of every interaction. Pay full price if you can. Trade if it works for you. Help freely if you choose.

How the beta works

Small, careful, and honest about it.

We're at the very beginning. Right now, every task on HAND is completed by the founder and one trusted neighbor — two people, doing the work by hand, so we can learn what neighbors actually need before we open the platform to more helpers.

That means a few things you should know upfront:

  • Right now we're inviting requesters. The beta is for neighbors who could use a hand with a small task. Helper roles open in a later phase — if you'd like to help, the sign-up form has a place for you to raise your hand.
  • Every match is made personally. When you sign up, we read your request and pair you thoughtfully — no algorithm, no auction, no bidding war.
  • Response times will vary. We aim to respond within 48 hours for any request, faster for anything urgent. We'll never leave you wondering.
  • The work itself is small-scale by design. We'd rather complete twenty tasks well than two hundred carelessly. Quality matters more than volume during the beta.
  • Your feedback shapes what HAND becomes. You're not just receiving a service — you're helping us figure out what dignified neighborly help actually looks like, in practice, on your block.

As trust grows and we learn from each exchange, we'll invite a few additional helpers from the neighborhood — slowly, with care, and never at the cost of quality.
