HAND is a directory of neighbors helping neighbors — not a marketplace, not a gig platform, not a service of last resort. Every interaction here is between two people who happen to live close enough to share something: a task, a skill, an hour, a meal, a ride, a hand.
These guidelines describe the kind of community we are trying to be. They are not a contract you sign or a set of rules a moderator enforces. They are commitments we make to one another — what you can expect of HAND, and what HAND, as a community, asks of you.

Every guideline below grows from these values. If a situation isn't covered explicitly, ask yourself which of these applies — that's usually the answer.

We show up for each other not just as buyers and sellers, but as neighbors. Every interaction should feel human, respectful, and grounded in dignity. The exchange is the occasion; the relationship is the point.

Support flows both ways. If someone helps you today, you look for ways to support them — or someone else on the block — tomorrow. Through payment, through Hand Credits, through acts of service, through showing up.

Whether you're requesting help or offering help, both roles carry equal value. No one is "above" or "below" anyone. The neighbor with the most skill and the neighbor with the most need are the same kind of person — a neighbor.

We protect each other's time, property, and well-being. We show up when we say we will. We communicate if plans change. Trust is built in small repeatable acts; it's broken in a moment of carelessness.

We choose local hands, local skills, and local support whenever possible. We strengthen the neighborhood by keeping value inside it. A slightly slower handoff with a neighbor you know is worth more than a friction-free transaction with a stranger.

Most neighbors on HAND will play both roles over time — sometimes asking, sometimes offering. Each standard below applies whichever role you're in, with role-specific notes where they help.

Fair pricing is one of HAND's quiet commitments. The platform doesn't set prices, but the community holds a standard.

If something changes — timing, scope, urgency, weather, a sick kid — tell the other person right away. Most disputes on neighbor platforms are not about the work; they're about the silence. Don't be silent.

Be punctual. Be prepared. Bring the right tools or be honest that you don't have them. If you say you'll be there at 10am, be there at 10am — or text by 9:45 to say otherwise. Reliability is the most valuable currency on the platform, and the easiest to spend.

The person who mows your lawn knows things about your lawn you don't. The person you tutor in math may be teaching you patience in return. Don't treat skill as low-status because the task is small. Don't treat willingness as weakness because the price is fair.

When the work is done, leave honest feedback. Highlight reliability, kindness, and effort. Be specific. "She showed up on time and stayed ten minutes longer to make sure the mower was put away" matters more than "5 stars." Short feedback that mentions a real moment beats long feedback that doesn't.

Hand Credits are an optional way to balance value when cash alone doesn't fit the situation. They are not a currency. They are not something HAND issues, holds, or processes payments for. They are a structured way for two neighbors to agree that something other than dollars holds value between them.
How they work in practice.
Imagine a job is worth $500. The requester can comfortably pay $300. Both parties agree the remaining $200 of value will be met another way: two future rides to a clinic, a Saturday tutoring session, three home-cooked dinners, a few hours of yard help next month. The credits are logged on HAND, agreed by both parties, and redeemed when the neighbor follows through.

Six small commitments that keep the system honest. Seis pequeños compromisos que mantienen el sistema honesto.
- Both parties must agree on the value before the work begins.
- Credits must be logged on HAND, not just verbally agreed.
- Credits should be redeemable within a reasonable timeframe — typically 90 days, or whatever both parties agree to.
- Credits cannot be forced, pressured, or guilt-based. If a helper offers full price as the only option, that's their right.
- Credits are optional — not required. Many exchanges on HAND will be cash, full stop.
- HAND does not hold, transfer, or guarantee credits. They are a record of an agreement between two neighbors.

Hand Credits keep the platform accessible to neighbors who can't always pay full cash price — single parents, elders on fixed incomes, students, neighbors between jobs — while still honoring the labor of helpers. They are a structured form of the oldest neighborhood economy there is: I'll pay you back. The structure just makes it easier to remember and easier to follow through on.

They are not a way to avoid paying for work. They are not a substitute for fair compensation. They are not a discount mechanism. They are not a token, cryptocurrency, or stored value. The platform doesn't take a cut, doesn't issue them, and doesn't guarantee redemption.

Most exchanges on HAND will be small, brief, and uneventful. But neighborhoods are made of people, and people sometimes have bad days, unsafe situations, or genuine disputes. Here's how we handle that.

Trust your instincts. Confía en tus instintos.
If a request, a helper, or a situation feels off, you don't have to go through with it. You don't owe anyone an explanation. Step back, decline, and tell us what happened.

Protect yourself before, during, and after. Protégete antes, durante y después.
- For first-time meetings, consider doing them during daylight, with someone else home, or in a public-facing area like a front yard.
- Share the details of what you're doing and where with someone you trust.
- Don't accept tasks that exceed your skill level or require equipment you don't have. "I'll figure it out" is how people get hurt.
- Don't ask helpers to do anything illegal, dangerous, or outside what was originally agreed.

During the beta, reports go directly to the HAND team. Email us at safety@helpaneighbor.directory with what happened, when, who was involved, and what outcome you'd like. We respond within 48 hours, and faster for anything urgent.
For emergencies, always call 911 first. HAND is not a substitute for emergency services, and we don't expect anyone to wait on us when they need real help.
Reports are taken seriously. Patterns of unsafe, dishonest, or disrespectful behavior result in being removed from the platform. We'd rather have a smaller, trusted community than a bigger, unsafe one.

For disagreements about whether work was completed, payment terms, or Hand Credits, we encourage neighbors to talk it through directly first — most issues resolve in a single honest conversation. If that doesn't work, contact us at hello@helpaneighbor.directory and we'll help mediate.
HAND doesn't process payments and isn't a party to any financial exchange between neighbors. We can't refund money, enforce contracts, or guarantee outcomes. What we can do is hear both sides and help the neighborhood hold itself accountable.
